Printer sales surge in Europe

RESEARCH INSTITUTE CONTEXT RECENTLY RELEASED DATA FOR THE FOURTH QUARTER OF 2022 FOR EUROPEAN PRINTERS. During the quarter, European printer sales surged beyond forecast.

The data shows that European printer unit sales increased by 12.3% year-on-year and revenue increased by 27.8% in the fourth quarter of 2022, driven by promotions for entry-level inventory and strong demand for high-end printers.

ACCORDING TO CONTEXT RESEARCH, THE EUROPEAN PRINTER MARKET IN 2022 WILL PLACE MORE EMPHASIS ON HIGH-END CONSUMER PRINTERS AND MID-TO-HIGH-END COMMERCIAL EQUIPMENT, ESPECIALLY HIGH-END MULTIFUNCTION LASER PRINTERS, COMPARED TO 2021.

A rebound in consumption was reflected in the strong performance of small and medium-sized distributors at the end of 2022, driven by commercial model sales, and steady growth in the e-tailing channel since week 40.

On the other hand, in the fourth quarter, unit sales fell 18.2% year-on-year and revenue fell 11.4%. The main reason for the decline was the decline in cartridges, which accounted for more than 80% of consumables sales. Refillable inks are growing in popularity, a trend that is expected to continue throughout 2023 and beyond, as they offer consumers a more economical option.

CONTEXT SAID THAT THE SUBSCRIPTION MODEL FOR SUPPLIES IS ALSO BECOMING MORE COMMON, BUT BECAUSE THIS MODEL IS SOLD DIRECTLY BY BRANDS, IT IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE DISTRIBUTION CHANNEL DATA.
